Following North Korean Soldiers Briefly Cross Border, South Korea Fires Warning Shots

On Tuesday, Seoul’s military said that it fired warning shots after North Korean soldiers briefly crossed the border this week, amid rising tensions over Pyongyang’s trash-carrying balloons and Seoul’s loudspeaker propaganda campaigns.

Referring to the line of control in the heavily fortified border between the two countries, the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) claimed in a statement, “Some North Korean soldiers working within the DMZ on the central front briefly crossed the Military Demarcation Line”.

“After our military issued warning broadcasts and warning shots, they retreated northward”, the statement continued, noting that the incident occurred on June 9, 2024.

The JCS went on to say, “Apart from the immediate retreat of the North Korean soldiers following our warning shots, there were no unusual movements observed”.

“The military is closely monitoring troops near the border”, the JCS added.

The 1950-1953 war ended in an armistice rather than a peace treaty, therefore the two Koreas are still technically at war.

In recent weeks, North Korea has launched hundreds of balloons packed with trash such as cigarette butts and toilet paper southward, in what it claims is payback for anti-Pyongyang propaganda carried north by activists.

In Response to the trash balloons, the South Korean government fully suspended a 2018 military accord to reduce tensions and resumed loudspeaker propaganda broadcasts along the border, alarming the North, which warned Seoul was creating a new crisis.

On Monday, South Korea’s military stated that it had detected signs the North was installing its loudspeakers.

North Korea had used loudspeakers along the border since the 1960s, generally blaring adoration for the Kim dynasty, but they were discontinued in 2018 as relations warmed.
