Ex-Pak PM Imran Khan Faces Physical Aggression During His Arrest For Toshakhana Corruption Case

After receiving a three-year prison sentence on Saturday as a result of the Toshakhana corruption case, the former Pakistani prime minister, Imran Khan, urged his supporters to continue protesting outside the court rather than remaining silent. In a recorded message, he also emphasised the value of protests that are peaceful.

Imran Khan was taken into custody in Lahore after being found guilty in the Toshakhana corruption case linked to an inquiry by the election commission. This incident revealed his involvement in the unlawful trade of state presents, amounting to 140 million Pakistani rupees ($635,000) from 2018 to 2022.

During the arrest, he experienced physical aggression and had his mouth and face concealed with a black cloth. According to accounts from witnesses mentioned in media coverage, the back and main doors were forced open for the arrest, and even his staff faced violence.

Khan has been detained twice this year. Since being ousted from office in April 2022 following a no-confidence vote, he has been involved in more than 150 legal battles. His supporters damaged property during his previous arrest by breaking into the army’s headquarters in Rawalpindi and the Corps Commander’s home in Lahore.

Speaking of the Toshakhana controversy, it gained attention in August 2022 when the coalition government, led by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), filed a case against Imran Khan. They claimed that he withheld information regarding the gifts he received at Toshakhana and the money he made from the “illegal” sale of some of those gifts.
