External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha in New York on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly and discussed the situation in the Black Sea, its market implications and ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation.
Jaishankar said the meeting provided an opportunity to review developments since his recent visit to Ukraine. Sybiha said the discussions covered peace efforts, bilateral cooperation and international developments.
The Ukrainian Foreign Minister said both sides discussed the Black Sea situation and its impact on markets, stressing that restoring freedom of navigation remains important for global food security. He said Ukraine was ready to contribute constructively and valued India’s engagement.

The two ministers also discussed preparations for the next meeting of the India-Ukraine Bilateral Intergovernmental Commission. Sybiha said the meeting would include a strong business component, with a focus on innovation.
He also expressed Ukraine’s interest in expanding cooperation with India in science, education, technology, agriculture, information technology and pharmaceuticals.
Jaishankar and Sybiha last met on September 3 during the External Affairs Minister’s standalone bilateral visit to Ukraine.
During that visit, Jaishankar reiterated India’s position that the conflict cannot be resolved through military means and stressed the importance of dialogue and diplomacy.
The two sides also discussed cooperation in education, health, agriculture, digital technology, innovation, diplomatic training and development cooperation.
Sybiha briefed Jaishankar on developments in the conflict and peace negotiations.
During his Ukraine visit, Jaishankar also met President Volodymyr Zelensky and discussed bilateral ties and efforts towards ending the conflict.
Zelensky said the two sides discussed the Black Sea situation and expressed appreciation for India’s stated position favouring an end to the war and a peaceful resolution.
