EAM Jaishankar Embarks On US Visit To Attend Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar has embarked on a three-day official visit to the United States from 30 June to 2 July.

The visit comes at the invitation of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and includes participation in the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (QFMM) in Washington on 1 July.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the upcoming QFMM will build upon discussions held during the previous meeting on 21 January in Washington.

The foreign ministers of India, the US, Australia, and Japan will review the progress of key Quad initiatives and deliberate on new proposals to advance their shared vision of a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific region.

“They will exchange views on regional and global developments, particularly those concerning the Indo-Pacific, and chart the path forward for the Quad Leaders’ Summit to be hosted by India,” the MEA stated.

Exhibition on terrorism at the United Nations

Ahead of the QFMM, Jaishankar will inaugurate an exhibition titled ‘The Human Cost of Terrorism’ at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on 30 June.

Organised by India’s UN Mission, the exhibition highlights the devastating impact of terrorist acts worldwide and the international community’s collective efforts to combat terrorism.

This event takes place just before Pakistan assumes the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council, underscoring India’s continued global advocacy for strong counter-terrorism measures.

High-level participation at QFMM

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will host the QFMM, joined by Australia’s Foreign Minister Penny Wong and Japan’s Foreign Minister Iwaya Takeshi.

Notably, the meeting marks Rubio’s second major diplomatic initiative since assuming office, reflecting the Biden administration’s renewed focus on Indo-Pacific cooperation.

“This meeting builds on momentum to advance a free, open, and secure Indo-Pacific,” said Thomas Pigott, Principal Deputy Spokesperson for the US Department of State. “This is what American leadership looks like: strength, peace, and prosperity.”

The QFMM marks the first ministerial meeting since the recent Pahalgam attack and aims to lay the groundwork for the upcoming Quad Leaders’ Summit in India.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will host US President Donald Trump, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba at the summit.

As tensions in the Middle East ease and focus returns to Asia, the Quad members plan to reaffirm their strategic commitment to regional security and strengthen cooperation to counter growing challenges posed by China.
