EAM Jaishankar Arrives In New York For 81st UNGA High-Level Session

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has arrived in New York for the high-level week of the 81st United Nations General Assembly, where he will lead India’s delegation and hold a packed schedule of bilateral and multilateral meetings.

A delegation of senior Indian diplomats received Jaishankar upon his arrival. He is scheduled to address the high-level session of the 81st UNGA on September 26, presenting India’s views and priorities on key global issues.

Jaishankar will meet leaders, foreign ministers and UN officials during the high-level week.

His engagements will include bilateral discussions, multilateral meetings and informal interactions with international counterparts.

India will highlight its development assistance and partnerships with Global South countries during several engagements. The government has identified the Global South, UN reform, peacekeeping, counter-terrorism, maritime security and technology as priorities for the 81st UNGA.

Jaishankar’s New York visit comes as India campaigns for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2028-29 term.

India launched its campaign in July, with Jaishankar presenting the SHANTI framework — “Securing Holistic Advancement through Norms, Trust and Integrity” — as the guiding approach for its candidature.

The minister will also participate in an Asia Society event on September 26.

His engagements in New York will further provide opportunities to discuss India’s priorities and strengthen diplomatic ties with countries and international organisations.

Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman is serving as president of the 81st UN General Assembly session.

India’s Permanent Mission to the UN has identified Security Council reform and continued engagement with the Global South among the country’s priorities for the session.
