Dubai Police successfully foiled the theft of a rare $25 million pink diamond within eight hours, arresting three suspects who had plotted for over a year to steal the gem.
The police codenamed the operation ‘Pink Diamond’ and recovered the stone before the criminals could smuggle it out of the UAE.
The suspects, all of Asian nationality, targeted a Dubai-based jeweller who owned the 21.25-carat Fancy Intense pink diamond, certified by a leading gemmological institute.
The gang posed as wealthy buyers, rented luxury cars, arranged meetings at upscale hotels, and even hired a diamond expert to gain the jeweller’s trust.
They eventually lured him to a villa under the pretext of meeting a buyer, stole the diamond, and fled.
Dubai Police’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) quickly deployed advanced tracking technologies to locate the suspects, who had split up after the theft.
Specialised task forces raided multiple locations simultaneously, arrested all three gang members, and seized the diamond hidden inside a refrigerator bound for an Asian destination.
The recovered pink diamond is classified as Fancy Intense, weighing 21.25 carats with exceptional clarity, symmetry, and polish.
Experts estimate that the chances of finding another diamond of similar purity are just 0.01%, making it one of the rarest gems in the world.
The jeweller, who imported the diamond from Europe, praised Dubai Police for their swift response.
“Within minutes of my call, patrols arrived, reassured me, and launched the investigation. To my surprise, by the next morning, police had arrested the suspects and recovered the diamond,” he said.
Operating in Dubai since 2005, the jeweller admitted being caught off guard by the scheme but urged fellow traders to follow official safety protocols.
“Dubai has become a safe global hub for the diamond trade. It’s vital we uphold the standards that protect this reputation,” he added.
