Former US President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump took the stage on Friday to share a harrowing account of a recent assassination attempt against him during a rally in Pennsylvania.
Speaking before a crowd at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Trump expressed gratitude for his survival and emphasized his belief that divine intervention was at play.
In his first public appearance since the attack, Trump recounted the dramatic moment when a bullet narrowly missed him.
Addressing the enthusiastic audience, who chanted “Yes, you are” in response to his declaration of survival, Trump reflected on the close call.
“I am not supposed to be here tonight,” Trump told the crowd.
The former president described how the bullet nearly struck him as he leaned forward to speak about his administration’s achievements on immigration.
According to Trump, the bullet missed him by mere inches as he turned to view a large screen displaying border crossing statistics.
“I began speaking proudly about our success at the southern border,” Trump said.
He further added, “I started to turn to my right to view the chart, and thankfully, I turned just enough to avoid the shot.”
Trump recounted the shock of the incident, noting a ‘loud whizzing sound’ and a sudden, intense pain in his right ear.
In his speech, Trump promised a vision of the four greatest years in the history of our country, vowing to run for president with a commitment to serve all Americans.
The attack occurred on 13 July when 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks fired multiple shots at Trump during a campaign event, injuring his right ear.
