Donald Trump wins over Nikki Haley in New Hampshire primary
With his victory in Tuesday’s crucial New Hampshire primary, Donald Trump moved one step closer to securing the Republican presidential nomination and setting up an incredible rematch with Joe Biden in the White House. It was unclear at the time of vote counting whether Trump had achieved the decisive victory to eliminate his lone opponent, Nikki Haley.
The former UN ambassador during Trump’s often turbulent presidency stated in a speech after the vote that the race was “far from over” and that Democrats “want” to run against her former employer. “They know Trump is the only Republican in the country who Joe Biden can defeat,” Haley, 52, warned.
Haley had anticipated a significant upset given the northeastern state’s high voter turnout. But as soon as the initial tallies were in, US broadcasters swiftly predicted her defeat.

Despite being the subject of four criminal trials since leaving office and having been impeached twice while president, Donald Trump was already the clear front-runner in national Republican polling. Even though Haley questioned the 77-year-old’s mental state on several occasions and warned that another Trump presidency would result in “chaos,” polls show that her efforts in New Hampshire were merely a speed bump.
“I think it’s a two-person race now between Trump and Biden,” Keith Nahigian, a veteran of six presidential campaigns and former member of Trump’s transition team, told media.
If Haley decides to stay in the race, New Hampshire was noticeably more Haley-friendly than the states she will subsequently face; it will be difficult to sustain her campaign into February if she doesn’t win or at least come in second. Her home state of South Carolina will be her next must-win destination. In the first Republican contest held in Iowa last week, Trump emerged victorious, with Haley trailing far behind.
