A Russian missile attack on a military educational facility in central Ukraine has resulted in at least 51 fatalities and over 200 injuries, according to Ukraine’s prosecutor general’s office, as reported by CNN. This incident marks one of the deadliest single attacks since Moscow’s full-scale invasion began in February 2022.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed the attack on social media platform X, stating that the Russian strike targeted an educational institution in Poltava and a nearby hospital. The attack partially destroyed one of the buildings at the telecommunications institute.

In his statement, Zelensky emphasized the urgent need for air defense systems and missiles in Ukraine, criticizing the international community for not providing sufficient support. “We repeatedly tell everyone with the power to stop this terror that Ukraine urgently needs air defense systems and missiles, not just stockpiles in a warehouse,” he said.
Zelensky reported that the strike involved two ballistic missiles hitting the area. Filip Pronin, head of the Poltava region military administration, announced the death toll on Telegram and indicated that rescue crews are still searching through the debris.
Moscow has yet to comment on the attack. However, Russian military blogger Vladimir Rogov confirmed earlier reports that Russia targeted a military school in Poltava.
Expressing his condolences, Zelensky acknowledged the efforts of those involved in the rescue operation. “Rescue teams trapped people under the rubble,” he said. Zelensky has ordered a comprehensive and swift investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack and expressed gratitude to those assisting with the rescue efforts.
The Ukrainian President also reiterated his call for increased Western support, urging allies to provide more air defense systems and to lift restrictions on Ukraine’s military capabilities. “Long-range strikes that can protect against Russian terror are needed now, not later. Every day of delay is, unfortunately, the death of people,” Zelensky added.
