Cyclone Asna Spurs Widespread Rain & Strong Winds Across Sindh & Balochistan

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has confirmed that while Cyclone Asna does not directly threaten coastal regions, it will bring severe weather conditions to several cities in Sindh and Balochistan on Saturday.

Despite the cyclone’s trajectory not endangering coastal areas directly, strong winds and intense rainfall are likely to impact Karachi, Tharparkar, Badin, Thatta, Sujawal, Hyderabad, and several other districts in Sindh.

In Balochistan, areas including Hub, Lasbela, Awaran, and Gwadar are also likely to experience adverse weather.

The cyclone has shifted westward over the past six hours and now sits about 120 km south of Karachi, 180 km southwest of Thatta, 250 km southeast of Ormara, and 440 km east-southeast of Gwadar.

This cyclone marks a rare occurrence, with PMD Director General Mahr Sahibzad Khan noting that it is the first cyclone of this magnitude since 1964.

On Friday, Pakistan faced severe consequences from heavy monsoon rains, with nearly two dozen lives lost due to the resulting devastation.

The extreme weather led to the collapse of homes, landslides, ruptured sewers, breached dykes, and the destruction of numerous mud houses.

Additionally, several individuals have swept away while attempting to cross-seasonal streams.

The PMD has issued a warning about the cyclone’s potential to cause widespread thunderstorms and heavy rainfall.

The sea conditions are likely to be rough to very rough, with wind speeds reaching up to 70 km/h.

Fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into the sea until at least Sunday to ensure their safety.
