Chinese Media Hopeful After PM Modi-President Xi Meeting In Tianjin

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping held a significant meeting on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin, drawing international attention.

The talks, aimed at strengthening bilateral ties, took place amid shifting geopolitical dynamics and growing concerns over global trade disruptions.

Chinese state-linked media outlets expressed optimism that the meeting could help stabilise India-China relations.

With the border situation having improved in recent months, the latest discussions are seen as a step towards sustained cooperation.

Commenting on the encounter, Shen Shiwei, CGTN Digital journalist and founder of China Briefing, said, “The border issues were a point of tension between the two countries, and things have recently improved. Hopefully, this trend will continue.”

Shiwei also highlighted the broader context of the SCO, noting that the summit had evolved into a crucial platform over the past two decades. He described the 2025 gathering as the ‘largest-ever SCO Summit’, adding that it features a mix of multilateral and bilateral dialogues.

Tianjin Declaration and Strategic Cooperation

A key outcome of the summit is the approval of the Tianjin Declaration, which sets a roadmap for development and cooperation among SCO member nations.

“This declaration will pave the way for progress over the coming decades,” Shiwei said, pointing to its significance in strengthening regional partnerships.

International analysts, too, have noted the strategic implications of the PM Modi-President Xi meeting, particularly against the backdrop of increasing US tariff pressures.

Nelson Pancini De Sa, a journalist from Brazil’s Folha de S.Paulo, said the summit could mark a turning point.

“The articulation between India, China, and Russia is particularly symbolic. These three nations have immense influence in Asia, a continent many now consider the future of global power,” he remarked.

Pancini also emphasised the role of Russian President Vladimir Putin as a vital link in facilitating India-China dialogue.

While substantial challenges remain, especially on the India-China border, both nations appear committed to maintaining open communication.

Analysts believe the SCO framework has the potential to continue fostering regional stability through diplomatic engagement.

“The SCO has long served as a platform for dialogue in Central and South Asia. Whether it can help bring lasting stability between India and China remains to be seen, but this meeting is certainly a hopeful sign,” Pancini concluded.

With both Indian and Chinese leadership participating actively at the SCO, there is cautious optimism that diplomacy will prevail in shaping a more stable and cooperative future between the two Asian giants.
