A black SUV rammed into a crowd at the Lapu Lapu Filipino Festival in Vancouver, Canada, killing nine people and injuring several others, the Vancouver Police Department (VPD) said on Sunday.
Police said a 30-year-old man from Vancouver drove the SUV into the festival at E 41st Avenue and Fraser Street shortly after 8 PM on Saturday. Officers arrested the driver at the scene.
Police posted on X, “As of now, we can confirm nine people have died after a man drove through a crowd at last night’s Lapu Lapu Festival. Our thoughts are with all those affected by this tragic incident.”
Police set up a 24-hour assistance centre at the Douglas Park Community Centre, 801 West 22nd Avenue. Officers and Victim Services professionals are helping people who have not reached their loved ones.
The crash happened during the Lapu Lapu Day Block Party, an annual event that honours the Philippines’ first national hero.
Police confirmed the incident was not an act of terrorism.
The Vancouver Police Department’s Major Crime Section is leading the investigation.
Earlier, police reported multiple deaths and injuries after the SUV struck the crowd.
Harrowing videos on social media showed victims lying on the ground, some appearing dead or badly hurt.
Witnesses said the SUV hit people who were walking or standing near food trucks.
New Democratic MP Don Davies posted on X, “Just heard the tragic news of the horrendous attack at the Lapu Lapu festival. I am praying for all the victims and their families.”
Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim said, “I am shocked and deeply saddened by the horrific incident at today’s Lapu Lapu Day event. Our thoughts are with all those affected and with Vancouver’s Filipino community during this incredibly difficult time.”
Emergency services remain at the scene. Police said investigations are ongoing.
Media reports said it is still unclear whether the crash was accidental or intentional.
