Cambodia And Thailand Seal Historic Peace Deal In Malaysia With Trump And Anwar Present

Cambodia and Thailand signed a historic peace accord in Malaysia on Sunday, ending years of border tensions and military standoffs. The ceremony marked a turning point for regional stability and Southeast Asian diplomacy.

US President Donald Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim witnessed the signing in Kuala Lumpur. Both leaders played key roles in facilitating the talks.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul signed the ‘Cambodia–Thailand Peace Accord’. The signing took place during the ASEAN Summit. Senior diplomats, ASEAN officials, and envoys from major powers attended the event.

President Trump praised the agreement and highlighted the role of economic diplomacy in achieving peace. He announced two additional deals, a new trade agreement with Cambodia and a strategic minerals partnership with Thailand.

“We do transactions, lots of them, with both nations as long as they live in peace,” Trump said. “When we make deals with countries we trade heavily with, we must use that business to ensure peace, not conflict.”

Prime Minister Hun Manet thanked Trump for his ‘decisive leadership’ and ‘tireless efforts’ in brokering the accord. He said the deal marked a new chapter in Phnom Penh–Bangkok relations. He said, “We must resolve every dispute, no matter how complex, through peaceful means.” Manet also expressed gratitude to Anwar Ibrahim for hosting the summit and guiding the process.

Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul echoed the sentiment. He thanked Trump for his diplomatic initiative and for offering condolences over the recent death of Thailand’s Queen Mother. “This peace agreement gives our people new hope for a stable and prosperous future,” he said.

The accord outlines joint border security measures, shared development zones, and a bilateral peace commission to oversee implementation. Officials say the framework will promote trust, trade, and cooperation along the border.

Trump’s presence underscored Washington’s renewed engagement in Southeast Asia. Analysts see the accord as a diplomatic win for Malaysia, which hosted the negotiations. They also view it as a success for the United States, which facilitated the final round of talks.

The deal marks the first formal peace agreement between the two neighbours in more than two decades.
