Armed Confrontation Near White House Triggers Brief Lockdown

Security around the White House was temporarily tightened after an armed individual was shot by officers following a gunfire exchange near the National Mall, authorities confirmed.

The incident took place on Monday afternoon when plainclothes personnel from the United States Secret Service noticed a person behaving suspiciously and appearing to carry a weapon in the outer security zone.

Officials said uniformed officers moved in to question the individual, who then attempted to flee. During the pursuit, the suspect reportedly drew a firearm and fired towards security personnel, prompting officers to respond with gunfire.

The individual was struck and later taken to the hospital, though no update on their condition has been provided.

A young bystander was also injured during the exchange but is not believed to be in critical condition.

Authorities indicated the injury was likely caused by shots fired by the suspect.

The shooting occurred a short distance from the White House, near a busy intersection, and prompted a swift lockdown of the surrounding area.

Journalists present on the North Lawn were directed indoors as a precaution, though restrictions were lifted shortly afterwards.

Despite the disruption, US President Donald Trump continued with a scheduled event inside the building. While he did not comment directly on the incident, he reiterated that security conditions in Washington remain strong.

Officials stated there is no immediate evidence that the suspect was targeting the president or the White House.

A weapon was recovered at the scene, and the Metropolitan Police Department has taken charge of the investigation.

The episode comes at a time of increased vigilance in the US capital following recent security breaches in high-profile areas.
