Arif Aajakia Raises Pakistan’s Water Crisis & Terrorism Concerns At UN-Linked Forum

Human rights activist and former Karachi mayor Arif Aajakia raised concerns over Pakistan’s internal water distribution, military influence and terrorism while speaking at a United Nations-linked forum.

Discussing the Indus Waters Treaty and Pakistan’s water crisis, Aajakia argued that Pakistan should examine its internal water management before blaming India.

He alleged that Punjab’s extensive canal network takes a major share of the water entering Pakistan, leaving reduced flows for Sindh and other provinces.

Aajakia also alleged that Pakistan’s water management contributes to both shortages and flooding in Sindh.

According to him, the country’s political and military structures have played a major role in the unequal distribution of resources.

He further criticised the influence of the Pakistani military, claiming that the institution has exercised significant power over the country’s political system for decades. He also raised allegations concerning the treatment of Sindhis, Baloch and Pashtuns, as well as conditions in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan.

Addressing Kashmir, Aajakia argued that improvements in infrastructure and public services in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir have challenged narratives promoted by Pakistan. He said people in Pakistan-occupied areas continue to face difficulties accessing essential services.

Aajakia also accused Pakistan of supporting cross-border and militant activities, describing terrorism as a major issue in the country’s regional policy. He referred to attacks including 9/11 and the 26/11 Mumbai attacks while making his allegations.

Aajakia said PM Modi’s Lahore visit offered a chance to improve India-Pakistan ties, but alleged that continued terrorism has hindered progress. He urged Pakistan to strengthen trade with India, curb terrorism and promote regional stability.

A former Karachi mayor, Aajakia, has also raised human rights concerns involving Sindhis, Baloch and other communities.
