The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the 2026 #NobelPrize in Chemistry to Henri B. Kagan and Kenso Soai “for the discovery of non-linear effects and autocatalysis in asymmetric organic synthesis.” https://t.co/nH090ql1Xc— The Nobel Prize (@NobelPrize) October 7, 2026
The Nobel Prize announcement recognised their work in understanding and controlling chirality in chemical reactions. Their research has strengthened the scientific foundations of asymmetric synthesis, an important field for producing molecules with precise three-dimensional structures.
Kagan pioneered asymmetric catalysis through chiral ligands, including DIOP. His work enabled high enantioselectivity in reactions such as alkene hydrogenation. He developed influential models that explained non-linear relationships between catalyst and product enantiomeric excess.
Soai became renowned for the Soai reaction, an autocatalytic system that demonstrates striking chiral amplification.
The reaction can transform extremely small initial imbalances in chirality into strong molecular asymmetry.
Soai research has significant implications for pharmaceutical synthesis, where precise molecular structures can determine the properties and effectiveness of compounds.
The discoveries have contributed to a deeper understanding of how asymmetric chemical systems can develop and amplify chirality. They have further informed scientific discussions about the origin of biological homochirality, the phenomenon in which living systems predominantly use one molecular handedness.
Kagan’s advances in asymmetric catalysis and Soai’s pioneering autocatalysis research have therefore provided complementary insights into molecular chirality. Their work continues to influence modern organic chemistry, pharmaceutical research and studies exploring how molecular asymmetry emerges and becomes amplified.
