Following the extension of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s custody by the Enforcement Directorate on Monday, his wife, Sunita Kejriwal, criticized the BJP-led central government, alleging their intentions to incarcerate the AAP chief amidst the Lok Sabha elections. She asserted that the people of the nation would respond to what she termed as “dictatorship.”
“Why has he been sent to jail? They have only one goal – to imprison him during the Lok Sabha elections. The people of the country will respond to this dictatorship,” remarked Sunita Kejriwal after the court proceedings.
In a contrasting tone, BJP leader and Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri drew parallels between Sunita Kejriwal and Rabri Devi, wife of Lalu Yadav, insinuating a similar ascension to power amidst her husband’s incarceration due to a corruption case.
“A Rabri Devi is in the making. I have already said 3-4 times in the past 7-10 days that ‘Rabri Devi’ will come forward. I mean to say that Sunita Kejriwal will come forward now,” stated Puri.
Puri further mocked Arvind Kejriwal’s situation, highlighting the continued detention of two AAP leaders, Manish Sisodia and Sanjay Singh. He questioned the viability of governance under such circumstances, sarcastically remarking on the possibility of cabinet meetings being held behind bars.
“Can any government-run from behind the bars?… Here is a government that has three ministers already behind bars. They have a quorum, they can have cabinet meetings behind bars,” quipped Puri.
BJP leaders expressed confidence in the court’s decision, with Bansuri Swaraj dismissing recent protests led by the INDIA bloc as a “flop show” and Sudhanshu Trivedi remarking on Kejriwal’s mentorship shift from Anna Hazare to Lalu Prasad Yadav.
The court, meanwhile, directed Tihar Jail authorities to accommodate Arvind Kejriwal’s medical and reading needs, including provisions for prescribed medications, books, a religious locket, and a special diet.
Arvind Kejriwal’s arrest by the Enforcement Directorate last month in connection with the liquor policy case has prompted claims from AAP that it was a strategic move to impede his participation in the Lok Sabha elections. Despite calls for resignation from the BJP, AAP asserts that Kejriwal continues to exercise his administrative duties within the confines of the jail.
