Bengaluru Gangrape: Rapido’s Criminal Rider

The Rider’s Criminal History Casts Doubt On The Company’s Verification Procedure.

After finding that one of Rapido’s riders, who is the main suspect in the alleged gangrape of a 23-year-old woman in Bengaluru’s Electronics City last week, was detained earlier this year on charges including criminal intimidation and assault.

The officer stated that the rider’s criminal history raises concerns about the company’s verification process and that the accused, which has been named as Shahabuddin, is from Bihar and currently resides in Bengaluru. The accused “has been working with Rapido since 2019,” was detained in January following an altercation involving a water issue, and was released on bond a month later, according to him.

Nowadays every third person in India uses the service offering by this company and Rapido is available in 40 cities in India, with over 2 million customers and nearly 15% of rapido users are women. This whole story raises a question about women’s safety and rapido’s company’s verification process.

According to C H Pratap Reddy, the police commissioner for Bengaluru City, “The Crime Branch recently held a session for cab aggregators and other service providers on security considerations.

We are also taking a systematic approach to this situation, waiting to see how it turns out before asking aggregators to plug any security protocol gaps.

.” The ride-sharing company issued a statement saying, “Rapid firmly condemns the activity of one of the riders registered on our platform that was booked by the police for attacking a lady and truly apologizes to the victim who had to endure such a terrible event.”

“We have offered the police all of our assistance and helped them catch the culprits. Rapido will continue to give the police its complete assistance. Rapido has a “customer first” philosophy, and we want to emphasize that their security and safety are our top priorities, according to the statement.
