Relentless rainfall across Maharashtra has prompted the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) to recommend that private employers in Mumbai allow staff to work from home wherever practical.
The authority has also instructed non-essential government departments in the city to function only until midday in view of the worsening weather conditions.
Officials warned that Red and Orange alerts remain active across several districts in the Konkan and coastal belt for 6 and 7 July.
Authorities strongly advised residents to avoid flooded roads, waterfalls, ghat stretches and all non-essential travel while keeping emergency helpline numbers readily available.
The Bombay High Court acknowledged the travel difficulties caused by the heavy rain and announced that it would not mark staff living in distant areas absent if they were unable to reach the court.
Continuous heavy rainfall caused widespread flooding, waterlogging and landslides across several districts, including Raigad, Ratnagiri and Chiplun.
A massive landslide completely blocked the Mumbai-Pune Missing Link, severely disrupting road connectivity between the two cities.
Floodwaters also damaged the railway track foundation between Karjat and Khopoli, significantly disrupting rail services.
Railway personnel spotted the damage in time and prompted authorities to suspend train operations on the affected section until they complete repair work and safety inspections.
Waterlogged tracks continue to delay Mumbai’s suburban railway services, with several trains running 15 to 20 minutes behind schedule. Stranded passengers formed long queues at Kalyan station as they waited for service updates.
Meanwhile, the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) has temporarily halted Mumbai-Pune bus operations.
With both rail and road links severely affected, thousands of commuters are facing considerable inconvenience while the state continues to battle relentless monsoon rainfall.
