Oil Markets Retreat After OPEC+ Announces Fresh Supply Increase For August

International oil prices edged lower as investors responded to OPEC+’s decision to increase production from August.

At the same time, the resumption of normal crude shipments through the Strait of Hormuz reinforced expectations of stronger global supply, putting additional pressure on prices.

Brent crude fell by 0.76 per cent to $71.55 a barrel, while US benchmark West Texas Intermediate (WTI) dropped by almost one per cent to trade below $69 per barrel.

OPEC+ approved an increase of 188,000 barrels per day in the combined production target for seven leading producers, including Saudi Arabia and Russia. The latest adjustment forms part of the group’s phased strategy to unwind the voluntary output restrictions introduced in 2023.

With this increase, the alliance’s cumulative production additions will reach approximately 940,000 barrels per day, equivalent to nearly one per cent of worldwide oil consumption.

The revival of crude exports through the Strait of Hormuz further influenced the market by increasing oil availability. The key shipping corridor has witnessed a steady return to normal operations following the easing of recent regional tensions.

Improved relations between the United States and Iran have enabled Gulf producers to restore production and export activity.

Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have already lifted shipments close to pre-conflict levels, increasing crude availability across international markets.

The additional supply has eased pressure in major importing regions, particularly across Asia, where concerns over shortages have diminished.

Greater availability has also intensified competition among OPEC+ members seeking to strengthen their position in the global oil market.

Analysts expect the producer alliance to announce one final increase in output during September, bringing the gradual reversal of the 2023 production cuts to a close.
