New Delhi Set For Heatwave Spell As Temperatures Climb Close To 44°C

New Delhi will likely experience a sharp rise in temperatures over the next few days, with forecasts indicating heatwave conditions from Wednesday to Friday and daytime highs approaching 44°C in parts of the city.

Authorities have issued a yellow alert in response to the developing situation.

Earlier on Tuesday, strong winds brought a brief respite, but the heat remained significant.

The maximum temperature at the base station in Safdarjung was recorded at 38.8°C, slightly above the seasonal average, while the minimum stood at 20.5°C. Night temperatures are projected to increase steadily, potentially touching 26°C by April 25.

Across the capital, readings varied but pointed to a warming trend.

Palam recorded a high of 38.6°C, close to normal levels, whereas Lodhi Road saw temperatures rise to 39.0°C, exceeding the average for this time of year.

The highest temperature was noted in the Ridge area, where the mercury climbed to 40.2°C. Ayanagar also reported elevated conditions, with a maximum of 39.8°C.

Minimum temperatures, however, remained slightly below normal across most stations.

Safdarjung reported 20.5°C, while Palam recorded 22.2°C. Lodhi Road saw a cooler night at 18.8°C, and the Ridge and Ayanagar stations logged 22.3°C and 21.2°C, respectively.

Delhi has not officially recorded a heatwave so far this season. The expected surge in temperatures over the coming days could mark the first such spell of the year. Residents are likely to feel increasingly intense heat as the week progresses.
