iPhones In Space? Artemis II Astronauts Take Them To Moon

Astronauts aboard Artemis II are carrying iPhones into deep space for the first time, reflecting a modern shift in how NASA equips its crews for missions beyond Earth’s orbit.

The four-member team launched aboard the Orion spacecraft atop the Space Launch System rocket from Kennedy Space Centre, embarking on a historic journey around the Moon.

The crew includes Commander Reid Wiseman, Pilot Victor Glover, Mission Specialist Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen.

Over the course of the mission, they will travel beyond the far side of the Moon before returning to Earth.

NASA approved the use of personal smartphones earlier this year as part of efforts to modernise crew equipment and simplify mission documentation.

The devices will allow astronauts to capture behind-the-scenes moments and share images with their families and the public without relying solely on traditional cameras.

During the deep-space phase, the iPhones will remain in aeroplane mode to prevent interference with spacecraft systems, functioning primarily as high-quality cameras.

When passing near the International Space Station, astronauts will connect to onboard Wi-Fi to send photos and emails, though voice communication will not be supported.

The mission marks the first crewed journey to the Moon’s vicinity in over 50 years.

Astronauts will capture live imagery of the lunar surface, observe rarely seen features, and even witness a partial solar eclipse from deep space, offering a unique perspective on space exploration.
