IMD Issues Yellow Alert As Delhi Temperatures May Reach 46°C

Delhi is set to face another spell of intense heat after a brief period of cloudy weather brought temporary relief to residents.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for the national capital, warning of heatwave conditions over the next three days with temperatures expected to remain between 44°C and 46°C.

The IMD said temperatures could rise further within the next 24 hours and stay high until May 27. The department expects noticeable relief only after that, when temperatures may drop by six to eight degrees Celsius.

Authorities have advised residents to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun and take precautions against heat-related illnesses.

The weather department has also predicted severe heatwave conditions in isolated parts of Delhi, Punjab and Haryana between May 25 and May 27.

Heatwave warnings are likely to continue in several northern states until May 28.

Humidity levels reached 37 per cent on Sunday morning, increasing discomfort across the city.

The IMD, however, has forecast light rainfall in some areas by Sunday evening.

Light showers, thunderstorms and gusty winds may bring relief across the region between May 28 and May 30 by lowering temperatures.

Several states continue to experience extreme weather conditions.

Authorities have issued red alerts for parts of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra due to severe heatwave conditions, while orange alerts remain in place for Telangana, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Jharkhand, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Karnataka.

Delhi’s air quality remained in the ‘poor’ category, with areas such as Anand Vihar, Narela, Sonia Vihar and R K Puram recording high AQI levels, raising further health concerns amid the ongoing heatwave.
