IMD Issues Nationwide Weather Alert; Heavy Rain, Thunderstorms To Lash Several States

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a nationwide weather alert, warning of intense monsoon conditions, including torrential rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds across several states on Monday.

The IMD said the next 14 hours will remain critical as heavy rain and severe weather are expected to intensify across many parts of the country.

Wind speeds may reach up to 80 kmph in some areas, increasing the risk of uprooted trees, power outages, traffic disruptions and waterlogging in low-lying localities.

The IMD has urged residents, farmers and travellers to remain alert, particularly near rivers and coastal areas, while warning of landslides and rising river levels in the Himalayan states. It has forecast widespread rainfall over Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh and Uttarakhand, with heavy to very heavy rain also expected across Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan from Monday.

The department has further warned of thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds in parts of Rajasthan and Uttarakhand, urging people to avoid open areas and follow safety precautions during adverse weather.

Eastern India will also witness active monsoon conditions, with Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, Jharkhand and Bihar expected to receive widespread rainfall.

The IMD has forecast the heaviest rainfall for Odisha, including isolated spells of extremely heavy rain on Monday, while Jharkhand and Bihar are also likely to receive heavy showers.

The IMD has asked state authorities to remain on high alert and urged the public to follow official weather advisories, avoid unnecessary travel during intense rainfall and take precautions in flood-prone, waterlogged and landslide-prone areas as the active monsoon continues across large parts of the country.
