Delhi Weather: IMD Issues Orange Alert For Rain, Thunderstorms, Strong Winds

Delhi continued to witness overcast skies and gusty winds on Thursday, a day after intense weather activity brought temporary relief from rising temperatures.

The India Meteorological Department issued an orange alert, warning of further rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds across the national capital and adjoining areas.

The weather office said wind speeds could reach 40–50 kmph, with gusts up to 60 kmph, and such conditions are likely to continue until Friday.

Authorities urged residents to remain cautious and prepare for possible disruptions.

On Wednesday evening, Delhi experienced a sudden spell of severe weather, including dust storms, heavy rain, lightning, and strong winds, which disrupted normal life.

At the Indira Gandhi International Airport, authorities diverted at least 16 flights to nearby cities due to adverse conditions.

Officials advised people to stay indoors during storms and avoid standing near windows, electric poles, and power lines. They also asked residents to secure loose objects to prevent accidents caused by strong winds.

Several stations recorded strong winds, with Pragati Maidan at 68 kmph, Pusa at 65 kmph, and Palam at 52 kmph, while other areas saw 43–48 kmph.

The India Meteorological Department forecast similar conditions nationwide, including thunderstorms in West Bengal and light rain with storms in Tamil Nadu and Karaikal.

Despite the rain, Delhi’s air quality remained in the ‘moderate’ to ‘poor’ category, with AQI levels ranging between 144 and 187.
