Delhi-NCR Braces For Severe Heatwave As IMD Forecasts 45°C Temperature

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a severe heatwave warning for Delhi-NCR for the next two days, with temperatures expected to remain extremely high before rainfall and thunderstorms bring relief later this week.

According to the IMD, the maximum temperature in Delhi may touch 45 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, while the minimum temperature could remain around 28 degrees Celsius.

The department has also warned of strong and hot surface winds during the afternoon and evening hours, which may increase discomfort across the region.

Humidity levels are expected to range between 25 and 40 per cent.

Authorities have advised residents to avoid going outdoors during peak afternoon hours, drink plenty of water and take precautions against direct sun exposure to prevent heat-related illnesses.

The weather department, however, expects conditions to change from May 28 onwards.

The IMD has forecast thunderstorms, light rainfall, gusty winds and squalls across several parts of Delhi-NCR.

On May 28, the maximum temperature may decline slightly to around 43 degrees Celsius. Strong winds with speeds between 50 and 60 kilometres per hour may accompany light evening showers.

The IMD expects a sharper drop in temperature on May 29, when the maximum temperature may fall to nearly 36 degrees Celsius.

The department has also predicted thunderstorms, lightning and light rainfall along with winds blowing at 40 to 50 kilometres per hour.

Similar weather conditions are likely to continue on May 30 and 31, bringing cloudy skies and intermittent rain.

Weather experts said the rainfall and thunderstorms form part of pre-monsoon activity affecting North, Central and East India.

The expected showers are likely to provide significant relief from the scorching heat currently affecting Delhi-NCR.
