Delhi Choked By Smog As Air Quality Slips Deeper Into Very Poor And Severe Zones

Delhi continued to battle intense air pollution on Monday morning, with thick smog blanketing the city and air quality remaining firmly in the ‘very poor’ range.

Several neighbourhoods recorded severe pollution levels, heightening health risks and affecting daily routines across the capital.

Official data from the Sameer air quality monitoring application showed Delhi’s average Air Quality Index (AQI) at 366 around 7.05 AM.

Narela emerged as the most polluted location, registering an AQI of 418. Other areas, including Anand Vihar, Bawana, Jahangirpuri, Mundka, Rohini and Wazirpur, also reported severe readings between 401 and 408.

Even localities with comparatively cleaner air failed to provide relief. Dilshad Garden recorded the lowest AQI among the city’s 40 monitoring stations at 301, which still falls under the ‘very poor’ category.

Health Risks Intensify

The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) classifies AQI values between 301 and 400 as very poor and considers levels above 400 to be severe.

Exposure to such conditions can trigger breathing difficulties and aggravate respiratory ailments, particularly among children, senior citizens and individuals with underlying health issues.

Medical experts continue to advise residents to limit outdoor exposure, especially during early morning hours when pollution levels tend to peak.

The persistent smog reduced visibility across the city, prompting authorities at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport to issue a passenger advisory.

Airport officials activated low-visibility procedures while continuing flight operations. They urged travellers to contact airlines for updates, as weather-related delays could occur.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast moderate fog conditions for the day. Delhi’s maximum temperature is expected to reach around 21 degrees Celsius, while the minimum may settle near 9 degrees Celsius.

On Sunday, the capital recorded a minimum temperature of 9.4 degrees Celsius, slightly above the seasonal norm, while the maximum temperature stood at 18.1 degrees Celsius. The combination of cold weather and stagnant atmospheric conditions has contributed to the worsening pollution levels.
