Air pollution levels in New Delhi recorded a marginal improvement on Friday. The Air Quality Index settled at 183, placing it within the ‘moderate’ category. The figures were released by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).
Earlier in the week, the capital had logged an AQI of 209 on Thursday and 294 on Wednesday morning. Both readings fell in the ‘poor’ category. The trend indicates a steady decline in pollution over the past two days.
Data from multiple monitoring stations showed that air quality varied across neighbourhoods. While certain areas reported moderate conditions, others continued to register readings classified as ‘poor’.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the city recorded a temperature of 12 degrees Celsius around 7 AM, accompanied by humidity levels of 95 per cent.
Under the official AQI classification, values between 101 and 200 are deemed ‘moderate’, whereas readings from 201 to 300 fall into the ‘poor’ category.
Delhi has seen relatively warmer afternoons in recent days, although light mist during the early hours has maintained a winter chill.
The IMD has projected that the minimum temperature may remain near 11 degrees Celsius, while the maximum could rise to about 27 degrees Celsius.
The forecast suggests mist in the morning, followed by partly cloudy skies. The IMD expects clear skies over the next two days and predicts that cloud cover will increase early next week.
The improvement in air quality has coincided with political criticism.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) questioned the BJP-led administration’s decision to establish six additional AQI monitoring stations in green zones.
AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj alleged that the government relocated monitoring units to open areas to present lower pollution figures rather than address core environmental issues. He further claimed that the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) had not addressed the matter.
The Delhi government has not yet responded to these assertions.
