Delhi Air Quality Improves Slightly After Two Days Of Severe Pollution

Air quality across Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) showed a marginal improvement on Tuesday after two consecutive days of severe pollution.

According to data released by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 397, placing it in the ‘very poor’ category.

The latest reading marks a decline from an AQI of 418 recorded on Monday and 439 on Sunday.

Despite the improvement, a thin layer of smog continued to blanket the region, leading to reduced visibility in several areas of the capital.

While pollution levels remained alarming, residents experienced some respite from the biting cold as temperatures rose slightly.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast maximum and minimum temperatures of around 24°C and 8°C, respectively, for Tuesday, offering partial relief from harsh winter conditions.

However, meteorological comfort has not translated into cleaner air.

The Air Quality Early Warning System (AQEWS) cautioned that Delhi’s AQI is likely to remain in the ‘very poor’ or ‘severe’ category over the coming days.

Several monitoring stations across the city continued to record hazardous pollution levels.

The AQI at Akshardham touched 445, while ITO registered 414 and India Gate recorded 409, all falling under the ‘severe’ category.

Experts Warn of Worsening Conditions

Environmental experts noted that without a significant shift in weather patterns, such as stronger winds, pollution levels could worsen again.

Calm atmospheric conditions are preventing the dispersion of pollutants, they warned.

In response to the persistent air pollution crisis, authorities have enforced Phase 4 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) across the NCR.

Under these measures, agencies have intensified checks on vehicles entering Delhi, turning back or penalising those that fail pollution norms.

Additionally, construction and related activities have been sharply curtailed to curb further emissions.

Officials stated that enforcement teams remain on high alert to ensure compliance with the restrictions.

The administration has urged residents to limit outdoor movement unless essential, wear protective masks, and take extra precautions for children and the elderly, who are most vulnerable to the adverse health effects of polluted air.
