ChatGPT Faces Widespread Outage; OpenAI Responds To User Frustration

OpenAI’s AI chatbot ChatGPT faced a major global outage on Tuesday, leaving thousands of users, particularly across the United States, frustrated and disconnected.

According to outage tracking platform DownDetector, over 3,400 reports flooded in from users who were unable to load their chats, access history, or use the chatbot at all.

Notably, 82% of users globally reported issues, with many encountering the message, ‘Unable to load projects’ or ‘Unusual activity detected’ while trying to access ChatGPT.

The outage affected not only web access but also mobile apps and services tied to OpenAI’s broader tools like Sora and Codex.

OpenAI Responds to Outage

OpenAI swiftly updated its Status page (https://status.openai.com) on Tuesday evening to confirm ongoing problems with ‘elevated error rates’ on ChatGPT’s record mode, along with issues in Sora and Codex.

The company noted that a mitigation was in progress and reassured users that the team was working urgently on restoring functionality.

At 5:50 AM on Wednesday, OpenAI reported that the root cause had been identified, though it did not disclose specific technical details.

The outage has had a widespread effect, particularly on professionals, students, and developers who rely heavily on ChatGPT for writing, research, coding, and communication.

Many users turned to social media and Reddit to share screenshots and express their concerns.

Some reported delays, others saw blank chat histories, and a few received error codes related to unusual usage patterns.

Ongoing Monitoring

As of Wednesday morning, OpenAI continues to monitor the situation and gradually roll out fixes.

While the platform is intermittently accessible for some users, others still face issues with responsiveness and loading errors.
