Can You Swap Your Train Seat? Know The Railway Rules Before You Move

Train travel is a preferred option for many passengers, especially for long-distance journeys, as it is considered both comfortable and affordable.

People often travel with friends and relatives, but sometimes they are unable to get seats together because tickets were not booked in time or for other reasons.

In such situations, passengers may request fellow travellers to exchange seats. Doing so without following railway rules can lead to problems.

According to the rules mentioned in the article, passengers should not occupy another traveller’s reserved seat without the permission of the Travelling Ticket Examiner (TTE).

Railway rules state that leaving one’s allotted seat and occupying another passenger’s reserved seat is an offence and can attract a fine and imprisonment.

Passengers who wish to exchange seats with co-passengers can do so with mutual consent.

Passengers can approach the TTE for official permission to change their seat or coach.

If another seat is vacant on the train, the TTE may allot it to a passenger in accordance with railway rules.

Sitting or sleeping on another passenger’s reserved seat without informing or obtaining permission from the TTE is against the rules.

A passenger who leaves their allotted seat and occupies another passenger’s reserved seat can be fined Rs 250. The information provided states that such an act violates railway rules.

Ticket Transfer Rules

The article states that selling or transferring a reserved seat to another person without railway permission is an offence.

Section 143 covers the unauthorised sale of railway tickets. It can attract imprisonment of up to three years and a fine of up to Rs 10,000.

Passengers should be cautious about travelling on waiting-list tickets.

If a ticket remains on the waiting list after chart preparation, travelling on it can attract a Rs 250 fine. The TTE may charge the passenger the full ticket fare.
