West Bengal Police arrested Sheikh Saidul Haque at Delhi airport in connection with the death of a four-year-old child following an alleged botched surgery in East Burdwan district.
Police said Haque allegedly posed as a doctor and performed surgery on the child at a hospital in the Nawabhat area a few days ago.
The child died shortly after the procedure, following which Haque reportedly went absconding.
The child’s family subsequently lodged a complaint, prompting police to begin an investigation and issue a lookout notice against Haque.
According to police, Haque travelled to Dubai after the child’s death and remained there while the probe continued.
Delhi Police arrested Haque at the airport on Tuesday night after he returned to the national capital. Following questioning and the completion of legal formalities, Burdwan Police brought him to Kolkata by flight.
Police reached Kolkata airport around 01:30 AM on Wednesday before taking Haque to Burdwan for further questioning.
The investigation is examining Haque’s alleged medical credentials and the circumstances surrounding the child’s death.
Police said they were verifying the allegations and collecting further information as part of the probe.
A police officer said Haque had left the country while the investigation was underway and was subsequently arrested on the basis of the lookout notice.
The Association of Private Hospitals and Nursing Homes welcomed the arrest.
An association member said they hoped the action would lead to further investigation into other individuals allegedly involved in similar cases.
Authorities are continuing to examine the circumstances of the child’s death, Haque’s alleged qualifications and other complaints reportedly linked to him.
