After facing significant global backlash, the Elon Musk-led social media platform X has disabled Grok’s objectionable image generation feature, restricting the artificial intelligence chatbot from creating or editing sexualised images of women.
The AI-enabled chatbot Grok will no longer be able to generate objectionable images of women, irrespective of whether a user holds a premium subscription.
Confirming the move, X’s safety account stated that technological measures have been implemented to prevent the editing of images of real people in revealing clothing, such as bikinis.
The restriction applies to all users, including paid subscribers.
xAI, the developer behind Grok, had come under fire from multiple countries over its controversial ‘Spicy Mode’, which allowed users to create sexualised deepfakes of women and children using simple text prompts.
Several countries either blocked access to the chatbot or initiated probes into its operations.
In India, MeitY sought an action-taken report from xAI, while California’s Attorney General launched a probe.
Civil society groups also urged Apple and Google to delist Grok and X over sexualised content.
X has since limited image generation to paid users, citing greater accountability, and pledged strict action against CSAM and non-consensual nudity.
Following MeitY’s December directive, the platform removed about 3,500 obscene images in India and barred around 600 users.
