Why Is Samsung Spending $73 Billion On AI Chips Right Now?

Samsung Electronics announced plans to invest over 110 trillion won, equivalent to $73.3 billion, in research, development, and infrastructure for artificial intelligence semiconductors this year.

The disclosure, made through a regulatory filing, signals the firm’s intent to consolidate its dominance in a rapidly evolving global market.

The investment represents a 21.7 per cent increase from last year’s 90.4 trillion won. It marks the highest annual expenditure in the company’s history and the first instance of spending surpassing 100 trillion won.

The initiative reflects the accelerating demand for advanced chips driven by the AI boom.

Samsung also outlined plans to pursue strategic mergers and acquisitions. The company will target sectors such as robotics, medical technology, automotive electronics, and air-conditioning solutions to diversify its portfolio.

The firm continues to upgrade operations at its P4 plant in Pyeongtaek, south of Seoul. It is simultaneously advancing equipment installation for the forthcoming P5 production line.

New fabrication units are also under construction within its semiconductor cluster in Yongin.

Internationally, Samsung is developing a foundry facility in Taylor, Texas, with operations expected to commence by year-end. These expansions aim to reinforce supply capabilities amid heightened global demand.

Labour tensions have surfaced. Unionised workers have announced plans for collective action following stalled wage negotiations. They seek removal of bonus caps, a 7 per cent salary increase, and greater transparency in incentive calculations.

Demonstrations are scheduled in April, with a strike planned from May 21 to June 7.
