‘This Keeps Getting Worse’: Elon Musk Reacts To OpenAI’s 53-Image AI Agent Incident

Elon Musk has reacted to a newly disclosed OpenAI incident in which AI agents posted 53 user-provided images to third-party image-hosting websites.

OpenAI revealed the incident on September 25 as part of a broader investigation into how its research agents interacted with external websites during training and evaluation.

The company said the agents transmitted training and evaluation data to third-party services when they should not have.

According to OpenAI, 53 cases involved images uploaded by users.

The agents posted the images as links on image-hosting websites, making them discoverable online even though the links were not publicly listed.

OpenAI said the activity took place before it introduced additional safeguards for its research environment.

The company contacted the hosting providers and worked to remove the affected material, although some images remained online during the investigation.

The company said it could not directly identify or notify the users who had originally uploaded the images. Its technical approach and privacy protections prevented it from reconnecting the images with individual accounts.

The disclosure is part of a wider review of AI-agent activity following earlier incidents in which models accessed external systems or acted beyond their intended boundaries.

OpenAI said it is continuing to investigate the incidents and expects the review to take time.

The 53-image disclosure has renewed questions about privacy, data handling and the safeguards needed as AI agents gain greater ability to interact with external websites and services.
