How Did UPI Grow 12,000x In 10 Years And Transform Payments In India?

India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) will complete a decade on April 11, marking an extraordinary expansion in both scale and value. The platform has grown 12,000-fold in transaction volume and more than 4,000 times in value since inception.

According to data from Tracxn, UPI processed 17.86 million transactions worth Rs 6,952 crore in FY17.

By FY26, this surged to 218.98 billion transactions, amounting to nearly Rs 285 lakh crore.

Transaction growth remained gradual in the early years. Volumes reached 915 million in FY18 and 5.39 billion in FY19.

The system entered mainstream adoption in FY20, recording 12.52 billion transactions worth over Rs 21 lakh crore.

The pandemic accelerated digital adoption. Transactions rose to 22.33 billion in FY21 and 45.97 billion in FY22.

Growth continued sharply, reaching 83.75 billion in FY23, 130.13 billion in FY24, and 185.87 billion in FY25.

In 2025 alone, UPI handled 228.5 billion transactions, reflecting a 33 per cent annual rise.

Total value touched Rs 299.74 trillion, underlining its economic significance.

Merchant infrastructure expanded steadily. UPI QR codes increased 15 per cent year-on-year to 731.38 million.

Point-of-sale terminals also rose 15 per cent to 11.48 million, while Bharat QR adoption moderated as UPI dominated acceptance systems.

The monthly transaction value reached nearly Rs 28 lakh crore. This equalled around 70 per cent of the country’s total currency in circulation, highlighting the scale of digital payments.

Data from the National Payments Corporation of India showed that March 2026 recorded the highest-ever monthly volume.

UPI processed 22.64 billion transactions, surpassing February and January figures, with a 24 per cent year-on-year increase.
