Govt Flags Rising Digital Dependency; Mental Health Crisis in Children & Youth

The government has identified digital dependency as a major health concern affecting children and young adults, according to the Economic Survey 2025-26.

Digital overuse is closely linked with declining mental well-being among youth across India.

The Survey highlighted that excessive screen time hampers academic performance and reduces workplace productivity.

It causes distractions, sleep deficits, and lowers focus. Social interactions and relationships also suffer.

Social media addiction is highly prevalent among individuals aged 15-24. It strongly correlates with anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, and stress from cyberbullying.

Compulsive scrolling, gaming disorders, and social comparison are rising problems.

These behaviours disrupt sleep, increase aggression, trigger social withdrawal, and elevate depression risk, with adolescents being most vulnerable.

To counter these challenges, authorities have introduced multiple initiatives. The CBSE issued guidelines for safe internet use in schools and school buses.

The Ministry of Education launched the Pragyatah framework, which emphasises planned digital education and regulated screen time.

The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights also released guidance on screen time limits and online safety.

Healthcare responses include the Tele-MANAS helpline, which has received over 32 lakh calls since its October 2022 launch.

NIMHANS Bengaluru established the SHUT (Service for Healthy Use of Technology) Clinic, providing specialised care for adolescents and young adults with compulsive technology use.

Additionally, the Online Gaming (Regulation) Act, 2025, addresses gaming addiction and financial risks among youth.

The Survey recommends creating offline youth hubs, particularly in urban slums and rural areas, to offer alternatives to digital spaces.

It also calls for moderated online safe spaces hosted by schools or community institutions.

Schools play a key role in shaping digital habits. Introducing a Digital Wellness Curriculum covering cyber safety, screen time literacy, and mental health awareness is crucial.

The Survey emphasizes a holistic strategy combining physical and mental health to ensure resilient, healthy youth.

By implementing these measures, India aims to manage digital dependency, protect mental well-being, and equip young citizens for a balanced future.
