Google is preparing to significantly deepen its investment in artificial intelligence by committing up to $40 billion to Anthropic, reflecting the escalating race among global tech firms to dominate the AI sector.
According to reports, the planned deal begins with an immediate $10 billion injection, based on Anthropic’s latest valuation of $380 billion. The company will likely receive a further $30 billion in stages, depending on whether it meets specific performance targets.
The two companies already share a long-standing collaboration, with Google supplying cloud infrastructure and integrating Anthropic’s Claude AI models into its ecosystem.
Anthropic also relies on Google’s specialised tensor processing units, offering an alternative to conventional graphics-based computing systems.
This latest move comes at a time when demand for generative AI tools is rising sharply across industries, increasing the need for high-powered computing capacity.
To support this growth, Anthropic has secured large-scale compute resources through partnerships involving Google and Broadcom. Further expansion plans are already underway.
Despite their close ties, the companies continue to compete directly. Google’s Gemini models are positioned against Anthropic’s offerings as both firms seek a larger share of the rapidly evolving AI market.
Google’s financial involvement with Anthropic has grown steadily over time. It first invested $300 million in 2023, securing roughly a 10 per cent stake.
Subsequent rounds lifted its total investment beyond $3 billion. Its holding was estimated at about 14 per cent before the latest proposal.
The scale of the planned funding highlights intensifying competition in the AI industry. Major players are committing vast sums to leading research firms such as OpenAI and its rivals.
Founded in 2021 by former OpenAI researchers, Anthropic has expanded rapidly. Its Claude models have seen strong adoption. The company’s annualised revenue has surpassed $30 billion.
The development follows a similar investment strategy by Amazon. The company recently committed billions to Anthropic, including additional funding tied to performance milestones.
