Zaheer Khan Appointed CSK Head Coach For IPL 2027

Five-time Indian Premier League (IPL) champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have appointed former India left-arm fast bowler Zaheer Khan as their new head coach for the 2027 season.

Zaheer will replace Stephen Fleming, who stepped down earlier this year after CSK missed the playoffs for a third consecutive season. The move also ends Fleming’s 18-year association with the franchise.

Zaheer brings an impressive playing record and considerable coaching experience to the CSK setup.

During his 14-year international career, he represented India in 92 Tests, 200 ODIs and 17 T20Is, taking 610 wickets across formats. He played a crucial role in India’s 2011 ODI World Cup-winning campaign and established himself as one of the country’s leading fast bowlers of the 2000s.

The veteran pacer also enjoyed a long IPL career. He represented Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals, featuring in 100 matches and taking 102 wickets at an average of 27.27.

After retiring from playing, Zaheer moved into cricket management and player development. He served as Director of Cricket Operations and Head of Global Development at Mumbai Indians before joining Lucknow Super Giants as a mentor in IPL 2025.

He also conducted a fast-bowling camp for India A, U-19 and targeted-pool pacers at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru earlier this year.

CSK owner Rupa Gurunath said Zaheer’s playing career and ability to nurture young talent would strengthen the franchise.

Managing Director KS Viswanathan also highlighted his experience mentoring young cricketers, particularly fast bowlers.

Zaheer now takes charge of a CSK franchise that has won five IPL titles and reached 10 IPL finals, beginning a new chapter after the Fleming era.
