What Happens If Rain Washes Out The IPL 2026 Final? Explained

The IPL 2026 season reaches its conclusion on Sunday as Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Gujarat Titans compete for the title at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

Cricket fans across the country are anticipating a high-quality contest between two of the most consistent teams of the tournament, with both sides aiming to finish their campaigns on a winning note.

Tournament organisers scheduled a reserve day for the IPL 2026 final to ensure the match reaches a conclusion if bad weather disrupts play.

If rain or any other interruption stops play before Sunday’s match produces a result, match officials will resume the game on the reserve day and continue it from the exact point at which they halted play.

The IPL rulebook also outlines a solution if the match remains incomplete even after the reserve day.

In such a scenario, the team that secured the higher position during the league phase would automatically be crowned champions. That provision favours Royal Challengers Bengaluru, who finished at the summit of the points table.

Bengaluru collected 18 points from their 14 league matches and recorded a superior net run rate of +0.783. Gujarat Titans matched that points tally but ended the regular season in second place with a net run rate of +0.695.

Weather predictions currently indicate that spectators are unlikely to witness significant interruptions during the final.

Meteorological projections indicate largely pleasant conditions in Ahmedabad, with only a very small chance of rainfall in the evening.

Although the forecast for the final appears encouraging, adverse weather recently disrupted the Gujarat Titans’ travel plans.

The franchise defeated the Rajasthan Royals in Qualifier 2 to secure a place in the final. The team, however, encountered delays on its return to Ahmedabad. Thunderstorms disrupted flight operations across parts of northwestern India.

Gujarat will aim to secure a second IPL crown in the final. Bengaluru, meanwhile, will look to retain the trophy. A victory would place RCB among the select group of teams that have successfully defended the title.
