Virat Kohli Returns To International Cricket; Claims Peak Fitness After Hiatus

Virat Kohli has made a much-anticipated return to international cricket, featuring in India’s opening ODI against hosts Australia at Optus Stadium. This marks his first appearance since India’s Champions Trophy victory, following his retirements from T20Is and Test cricket.

Ahead of the match, Kohli spoke with Fox Sports alongside Ravi Shastri and Adam Gilchrist.

He reflected on his long career, stating that he had ‘not rested at all’ over the past 15-20 years, having combined international cricket with the Indian Premier League. He described his recent break as ‘very refreshing’, highlighting how consistent engagement in the sport has shaped his approach to fitness and performance.

Addressing concerns over his fitness, Kohli, 36, asserted that he is ‘fitter than ever’, noting the importance of physical preparation to complement his mental awareness on the field.

He further explained, “At this stage, I realised that if my body is fit, if my reflexes are there, then the game awareness is already there. My body has to match up with it. I’m feeling fresh here coming into Australia and moving really well in the nets and in the fielding sessions as well, so all good so far.”

The star batsman emphasised that maintaining fitness allows him to focus on game strategy and execution without distraction, providing him with confidence as he re-enters competitive cricket.

Retirements from T20Is and Tests Mark a New Phase

Kohli retired from T20I cricket last year after India’s ICC T20 World Cup triumph, followed by his retirement from Test cricket earlier this year. These decisions marked the end of a remarkable chapter in his career while opening the door to a renewed focus on ODIs and a balanced approach to the game.

As India face Australia in the three-match series, fans and experts alike will watch closely to see if Kohli’s form and fitness translate into a commanding return on the international stage.
