Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Breaks Duleep Trophy Record With Historic Half-Century

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi achieved a remarkable milestone in the Duleep Trophy during East Zone’s semi-final against Central Zone at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru on Monday.

The teenage batter reached his fifty in only 42 balls when he was 15 years and 175 days old, setting a new age record in the prestigious domestic competition.

Sooryavanshi broke the previous record belonging to Laxman Singh, who scored his first Duleep Trophy half-century at 16 years and 23 days in 1969.

Former India spinner Piyush Chawla holds the third position after recording a fifty in the tournament at 16 years and 307 days.

Sooryavanshi carried his attacking approach deep into his innings and eventually scored 92 from 81 deliveries. He struck seven boundaries and cleared the ropes seven times during an entertaining knock that came at a strike rate of 113.58.

The youngster forged a 161-run opening partnership with Abhimanyu Easwaran before Harsh Dubey brought his innings to an end.

Sooryavanshi fell just eight runs short of a century on his Duleep Trophy debut. His performance, however, further strengthened his growing reputation in first-class cricket.

The teenager found himself leading East Zone temporarily after captain Ishan Kishan injured his hand during the first session.

Sooryavanshi took over the captaincy for approximately an hour around the lunch break. He made an immediate impact. He successfully reviewed a not-out decision involving Central Zone opener Aryan Juyal in the 40th over.

The review showed that Juyal had edged Mukesh Kumar’s delivery, allowing East Zone to secure a crucial wicket.

Central Zone managed 266 runs before losing all their wickets in 80.1 overs after Kishan elected to bowl first.

Mukesh Kumar and Abhijit Sarkar led the East Zone attack with three wickets apiece.

Mohammed Shami and Kounain Quraishi added two wickets each to the bowling effort.

Rinku Singh emerged as Central Zone’s leading scorer, making 60 from 88 balls. East Zone, however, retained control of the semi-final.
