The excitement for the IPL 2024 season is reaching its peak as defending champions Chennai Super Kings gear up to host Royal Challengers Bangalore in the opening match at the iconic MA Chidambaram Stadium on March 22.
The IPL recently unveiled a partial schedule featuring the first set of 21 matches, scheduled between March 22 and April 7. With the IPL final slated for May 26, there’s a tight turnaround before the commencement of the men’s T20 World Cup, set to take place in the USA and the Caribbean from June 1.
The remaining schedule will be revealed once the Election Commission of India announces the dates for the national elections, anticipated to be held in April and May.
The inaugural match of the tournament is scheduled to kick off at 8 pm IST, with subsequent matches following the usual timings: 7.30 pm IST for evening games and 3.30 pm IST for double-headers.
The initial schedule includes four double-headers, with two on the opening weekend. On March 23, Punjab Kings will face Delhi Capitals in the day match, followed by Kolkata Knight Riders hosting Sunrisers Hyderabad at Eden Gardens.
March 24 will witness Rajasthan Royals taking on Lucknow Super Giants, while Hardik Pandya’s Mumbai Indians will begin their campaign away against Gujarat Titans, his former team. Notably, the season opener will not feature both finalists from the previous season, with Titans starting their campaign two days later.
In the initial set of matches, Punjab Kings and Titans will play back-to-back games with just a day’s break. After their opening match on March 23, Punjab Kings will head to Bengaluru to face RCB on March 25, while Titans, led by Shubman Gill following Hardik’s move, will travel to Chennai to battle CSK on March 26.
Interestingly, Delhi Capitals will not play any games at their home ground, Feroz Shah Kotla, between March 22 and April 7. Instead, both their matches during this period will be held at the ACA-VDCA Stadium in Visakhapatnam. This decision comes after the Delhi and District Cricket Association informed the IPL governing council of potential venue constraints, owing to the hosting of 11 Women’s Premier League matches, including the final, until March 17.
