T20 World Cup Semi-Final: New Zealand Win Toss, Bowl Against South Africa

New Zealand skipper Mitchell Santner won the toss and decided his team would field first against South Africa in the opening semi-final of the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup at Eden Gardens on Wednesday.

The victor of this encounter will advance to the final scheduled for Sunday at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

South Africa has enjoyed a perfect record against New Zealand in previous T20 World Cup meetings, claiming five wins from five matches. This marks their first meeting in a knockout fixture of the tournament.

In contrast, New Zealand have historically held the upper hand in 50-over ICC knockout matches between the two sides.

Fast bowler Matt Henry rejoined the line-up after returning to the squad following the birth of his second child. All-rounder Jimmy Neesham was also drafted back into the XI, replacing leg-spinner Ish Sodhi.

Santner noted that the surface looked encouraging and stressed that his team must execute their plans effectively to challenge a strong South African outfit.

Proteas captain Aiden Markram confirmed that he has brought Kagiso Rabada, Marco Jansen and Keshav Maharaj back into the side after resting them for the final Super Eights fixture against Zimbabwe in New Delhi.

He highlighted the importance of delivering a complete team performance and setting a solid total in a knockout contest.

Pitch Report at Eden Gardens

According to pitch analysts Pommie Mbangwa and Aaron Finch, the square boundaries measure 62 and 66 metres, while the straight boundary extends to 74 metres.

They observed minor cracks along the off-stump channel for right-handed batters, which could assist seam movement early in the innings and produce uneven bounce with the new ball.

Analysts added that the pitch will settle and play more consistently once the ball loses its shine, as it previously did during the India–West Indies Super Eights match.

They also expect heavier dew to develop later in the evening, after only minimal moisture affected the previous fixture.
