Suryakumar Yadav Sees Rehab As Chance To Return Stronger Ahead Of Asia Cup 2025

India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav described his rehabilitation after sports hernia surgery as an ‘opportunity to return as the best version’ of himself.

The 34-year-old batter underwent surgery in Germany earlier this year and completed his recovery at the BCCI’s newly-built Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru.

Suryakumar revealed that doctors diagnosed the injury towards the end of the IPL 2024 season. Having suffered a similar injury earlier, he immediately recognised the symptoms.

“I did an MRI after the IPL, and it was very clear. I went to Germany, the surgery went well, and I knew the recovery process would be step-by-step. We took it one week at a time, and I’m feeling really good now,” he said in a BCCI video.

The Mumbai batter praised the CoE facility for offering world-class infrastructure and equipment.

“The gym can accommodate 30–35 athletes training together. I used almost all the equipment, including some new equipment designed for athletes. There are also 60–70 wickets and three grounds. This is the best facility I have seen in a long time,” he noted.

Suryakumar credited the strength and conditioning coaches and physios at the CoE for tailoring workouts based on his body’s needs.

“They understood how my body reacted to certain situations and planned sessions accordingly. As soon as I entered the gym, they adjusted my training instantly,” he said.

The Indian captain highlighted the importance of staying surrounded by supportive people during rehabilitation.

“The most important thing during rehab is to have good people around you who guide you well. I always saw rehab as an opportunity to return as the best version of myself,” he added.

Suryakumar will lead India in the upcoming Asia Cup 2025 in the UAE. The team begins its campaign against the hosts on September 10 before facing Pakistan on September 14 and Oman on September 19.
