Sunrisers Hyderabad produced an impressive all-round effort to overcome Punjab Kings by 33 runs in Match 49 of IPL 2026 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. Their authoritative display with both bat and ball helped them climb to the top of the points table.
Batting first, SRH adopted an attacking approach right from the beginning. Openers Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head provided a rapid start, maintaining pressure on the opposition during the powerplay overs. Although an early wicket fell, the team’s scoring momentum remained unaffected.
During the middle phase of the innings, Punjab Kings’ sloppy fielding proved costly. Ishan Kishan, who received multiple reprieves, including dropped catches and a missed stumping, capitalised effectively to score a brisk 55.
Heinrich Klaasen also benefited from an early chance. He responded with a composed half-century and ensured SRH crossed the 200-run mark comfortably.
Punjab Kings’ inability to hold on to key chances turned the match in SRH’s favour. The missed opportunities against well-set batters allowed Hyderabad to post a formidable total of 235/4, putting the pressure firmly on the chasing side.
Chasing a challenging target, the Punjab Kings got off to a poor start as the Sunrisers Hyderabad struck early with the ball. Both openers, Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh, were dismissed within the first few deliveries, leaving the visitors under immediate pressure.
The situation worsened when Shreyas Iyer fell soon after, reducing PBKS to 57/3 during the powerplay despite a healthy scoring rate. The rising required rate made the chase increasingly difficult.
Marcus Stoinis and Cooper Connolly attempted to revive the innings with an attacking stand, adding valuable runs to steady the chase.
Connolly, in particular, showed determination and skill, anchoring the innings with a superb knock. He went on to score an unbeaten 107, registering a remarkable century under pressure.
Despite his efforts, the mounting required run rate and lack of support from the other end meant Punjab Kings could not close the gap.
Sunrisers Hyderabad bowlers executed their plans effectively, maintaining discipline and picking up wickets at regular intervals. Their consistent pressure ensured that the Punjab Kings remained well behind the target throughout the chase.
With this convincing victory, Sunrisers Hyderabad moved to the top of the IPL 2026 standings. The win also boosted the team’s chances of securing a playoff berth.
Sunrisers Hyderabad: 235/4 in 20 overs (Heinrich Klaasen 69, Ishan Kishan 55).
Punjab Kings: 202/7 in 20 overs (Cooper Connolly 107*, Marcus Stoinis 28).
Result: Sunrisers Hyderabad won by 33 runs.
