Smriti Mandhana Sets T20I Run-Scoring Record As Jay Shah Hails Landmark

Smriti Mandhana added another record to her international career during India’s Asian Games semi-final against Bangladesh at the Korogi Sports Park on Sunday.

The India vice-captain struck 37 from 19 deliveries and crossed Suzie Bates’ mark to claim the highest aggregate in T20I cricket across the men’s and women’s game.

Mandhana reached 4,788 runs in 171 innings after entering the contest with 4,751 runs from 170 appearances.

ICC Chairman Jay Shah praised the Indian opener after she reached the historic milestone.

“Many congratulations to Smriti Mandhana for going top of the Women’s T20I run charts (4,788 runs). By rewriting history, you are lifting women’s cricket to new heights and setting the standard for young dreamers everywhere. Here’s to many more milestones ahead!” Shah wrote on X.

Mandhana required only eight runs to move ahead of Bates and achieved the mark early in her innings after collecting two boundaries and two singles.

The T20I achievement followed another notable milestone for Mandhana during the Women’s Asia Cup.

She overtook former India captain Mithali Raj’s 10,868 international runs after producing a 124-run innings against Hong Kong.

That performance also gave Mandhana her 18th international century, taking her beyond Australia’s Meg Lanning for the highest number of hundreds in women’s international cricket.

South Africa captain Laura Wolvaardt subsequently matched Mandhana’s century record.

Mandhana made her international debut in 2013 and has since established herself as a leading batter across formats.

Her latest record further reflects her sustained output in the shortest format of the international game.

She currently occupies fifth place in the ICC women’s T20I batting rankings and leads the ODI batting rankings.

Mandhana’s milestone came as India secured their place in the Asian Games gold-medal match after defeating Bangladesh in the semi-final.
