India captain Shubman Gill is looking forward to returning to New Zealand, where he made his international debut, ahead of the upcoming ODI series.
Gill made his ODI debut against New Zealand at Seddon Park in Hamilton on 31 January 2019.
“I’m here at Eden Park, you know, always, always very exciting. I made my international debut here in New Zealand, so I have a lot of good memories here. I feel very good whenever I come here, and hopefully, you know, when I go back after a month, I will take a lot of good memories from here,” Gill said.
Gill highlighted Eden Park’s unusual dimensions, saying they could challenge India’s fielding strategies.
“The dimensions are a bit weird, and I think it will be a challenge for us to be able to find the right placement for the fielders. Hopefully, you know, we can find those pockets sooner rather than later,” he said.
The captain also noted that the straight boundary, measuring around 50–55 metres, could tempt batters to attempt big shots. However, he stressed that batting plans depended on individual players and match situations.
Gill has scored 758 runs in 15 ODI innings against New Zealand, averaging 63.17 at a strike rate of 102.85.
The 26-year-old said performances in overseas conditions would strengthen confidence among India’s younger players and reinforce the team’s belief in its ability to defeat any opponent.
He added that winning the series would provide a significant boost ahead of future challenges.
“So, if we win the series here, it will be a big confidence booster for us,” Gill said.
The first ODI will take place at Eden Park as India begin their campaign in New Zealand.
