Shreyas Iyer Out Of ICU And Recovering After Spleen Injury In Sydney ODI

Indian cricketer Shreyas Iyer is now stable after doctors moved him out of intensive care.

He sustained a spleen laceration during the third ODI against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground, sources confirmed on Monday.

Doctors first thought he had a rib injury, but further tests showed a tear in his spleen, a serious condition that required immediate hospitalisation.

Iyer entered a Sydney hospital’s ICU but has improved steadily since. Meanwhile, his family plans to travel to Australia soon to support him during his recovery.

A spleen laceration occurs when the organ ruptures or tears. The spleen filters blood and fights infection, so any damage can cause internal bleeding and demands urgent medical attention.

Earlier, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage while fielding on October 25.

After scans revealed the spleen injury, the BCCI medical team, along with specialists in Sydney and India, began monitoring him closely.
“The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his injury status. The Indian team doctor will remain in Sydney with Shreyas to assess his progress daily,” the board stated.

The injury occurred in the 33rd over of Australia’s innings when Iyer dived to catch Alex Carey off Harshit Rana’s delivery. Fielding near backward point, he sprinted back and completed a stunning tumbling catch before showing visible discomfort.

Now, as Iyer continues to recover, both the team management and fans remain hopeful about his full recovery in the coming weeks. Medical professionals in Sydney continue to monitor his condition closely.
