Rohit Sharma
India captain Rohit Sharma has announced his retirement from Test cricket, ending a decade-long journey in whites.
He announced via Instagram, placing his Test cap No. 280 alongside a heartfelt message.
In his post, Rohit wrote, “Hello everyone, I would just like to share that I am retiring from Test cricket. It’s been an absolute honour to represent my country in whites. Thank you for all the love and support over the years. I will continue to represent India in the ODI format.”
This move ends his Test career ahead of India’s five-match tour of England, starting June 20.
India will now need a new Test captain, with Shubman Gill emerging as the likely successor.
Rohit’s recent form in Test matches had dipped. He averaged just 6.20 in five innings during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, which India lost 3-1.
Rohit Sharma dropped himself from the final Test at Sydney. In the home series against New Zealand, he averaged 15.16 in a 3-0 defeat.
According to IANS, “This has been in the making for a while, despite Rohit saying during the Sydney Test that he wasn’t going away. The selection for the England Test tour has now been pushed by two weeks.”
Rohit debuted in 2013 against the West Indies in Kolkata, scoring a century. He finishes with 4,301 runs from 67 Tests, including 12 centuries and 18 fifties, averaging 40.57.
As captain, he led India in 24 Tests, winning 12 and losing 9.
With Jasprit Bumrah unlikely to play all five Tests in England, Shubman Gill, currently leading the Gujarat Titans in IPL 2025, is the front-runner for the Test captaincy.
At 25, and already vice-captain in white-ball formats, Gill is expected to lead India into the next World Test Championship (WTC) cycle.
Rohit had earlier announced his T20I retirement after India’s T20 World Cup win in June 2024. Now, only ODIs remain in his international career.
